30 August Victory Day

Today is one of substantial days for Turks, our victory day!

It's official holiday  to commemorate the victory in the battle of Dumlupınar, one of the most important battle in Turkish war of independence in 1922. This date is a turning point in our history.

Ceremonies start at 07:00 and last until 24:00. The president visits Anıtkabir (Ataturk's grave) and lays a wreath. It's celebrated by all people with concerts, festivals and amusements.

In recent years, we have bad days because of terrorism. For this reason, we sometimes have to cancel our celebrations.

I hope that we and all world get rid of this nuisance.

A Turkish Tradition: Ask for the girl in marriage

Turkish people have an unusual tradition called asking for the girl. What is that?
I'm sure you're curious.
Let me introduce. :)

You know, if you have a relationship as a boy and you decide to marry with her, you have to propose marriage.

In Turkey, after this ceremony, the families from both sides become a part of this activity. As a boy's side, you must prepared a meeting at girl's home. You have to go with your mom, dad, siblings and grandparents if you have. Girl's side also consists of the same people+sometimes her close friends. In that day, the bride wears plain and elegant and the groom wears his best suit. The boy's side buys desert and flowers while they're going.

At that moment...
They sit together and continuously ask how they are each other.

-How are you?
We're fine, and you?
-We're ok. Thank you.
-How are you otherwise?
We're ok. You?
We're fine. Thanks.

Sometimes you hear sentences like this:
-Weather is very nice, isn't it?
- Yes, yes. It was cold lately.

All of this bullshits come from excitement.

At that time,
Girl brings turkish coffee for everyone. But there's an exception for boy. When she makes a coffee, she puts much more salt and red pepper for him. He has to drink it. It will be very difficult for him but it's his exam:)

This coffee cup is made up for groom.
The letter on the saucerful means ''Resist groom!'' :)
At last, his father or grandfather begin to talk about main issue.

He says:

''In the ordinance of Allah's (God’s) holy order and the commands and blessing of our prophet we ask for your daughter to join our son in marriage.''

The girl's dad thinks about that and sometimes asks to his daughter. Generally, he says: we gave. (means we let)

And then...

Senior member of the family wears their rings.

What do you think about this tradition?
It's so important and mandatory for our culture.

Have you ever imagined a life without technology?

Thanks to technology,  the life has become easier and more comfortable today. We can reach lots of information immediately. We can communicate with the people from all over the world. We can watch a concert from the furthest place of the world or we can write for the people we’ve never met before in our blogs. That’s to say, all of us have their reasons to be part of technology.

After all…

Have you ever imagined a day without technology?
Let’s consider that you don’t have your mobile phone, ipad, computer etc. What would life be in this situation? Would it be difficult or easy for you? Your answer is keyword.

Nowadays, the majority of people find it difficult. No doubt, these people is virtually transforming a robot day by day. They have  monotonous day. Like a vicios circle: wake up, open your computer, wash your face, use the toilet, make a breakfast, sit down in the face of computer, break for your needs, sit down again, dinner, computer and go to bed.

Some people of this category have better situation. They don’t spend all their day coping with computer;but they make an impression as addicted. They can’t speak very well. They usually inexpress themselves. Because, the only thing they do is following other people, liking their photos and sharing his/her every moments. Most of these sharings are lie. In short, they perform their role very professionally and then they also go to bed.

If you’re one of these people…

Could you please tell me what the results are? At the end of the day, how do you feel yourself? Are you happy and satisfactory? Did this addiction contribute a lot to you? Did you learn something new? I hope you’ll share your answers with me.

Let’s think about the other kind of people.

They are intelligent , successful and ordinate by reason of their planned life style. They know what and when to do. When they are at a cafe with their friends, they look at their faces instead of looking at phone. They are healthy because they’ve never spent their time looking at devices and bending the neck. They are active and sportive unlike addicted people.

We’re living in an information age where the use of technology is essential. However, it must not mean you have to be controlled by technology. We are human not robot, so we shouldn’t forget our values and responsibilities especially against us.

I make an offer for you.

Try for tomorrow not to take your phone.

Put it your drawer.

Get out and look at the beauties of the world, the truth you forget about their existence.

Walk around and breath.

No need the earphones. Listen to the music of birds.

Greet someone while looking straight in the eye.

Realize the good part of the world.

Read a book for hours.

Feel this moment.

Finally, the day after tomorrow, you can share your ideas with me.

I will be waiting for you :)

Turkish Flag

Turkish flag
I'd like to mention about Turkish flag's history.

You know flag is a symbol of a nation and its independent. Its value is very important for Turkish people. We never let it fall and keep in the best part of our home. It has white crescent and star on red background. This star was 8 cornered at first. It was accepted official flag of Ottoman Empire for the first time in 1793. It was decided to be 5 cornered in Abdulmecid's time. Its shape became definite.

According to legend:

The night after Kosovo war that Ottoman Empire defeated, crescent and star reflected to the blood bath in battle field. Thus, this symbol was started to use.

According to other legend:

Osman Gazi who is the founder of Ottoman Empire dreamt a cresdant and star in his chest and it began to enlarge. He commented this dream for the size of his country and decided to use this as a  symbol of flag.

It's considered to refer to religion,Islam but it has a lot of signs from shamanism, the oldest Turkish religion. We can say that these symbols are contributed to Islam by Turks.

Here is the tallest Turkish flag. It's located in Ankara/Cebeci Park.
The pole legth is 100 metre. The flag is 300 square meter.
This is the biggest Turkish flag,4532 square meter.  It's located in Mersin.

These are the Azerbaijan's and Tunusia's flags. They resembles to Turkish flags. In addition, there are lots of flags like ours. They have only different colours.

To me, Turkish flag is a symbol of our spirit. You look and you live whatever it means. When we look at, we know that our ancestors died in the cause of this country and we owe to them. I want to  translate for you a Turkish writer's(Mehmet Akif Ersoy) verses. Besides, he's the writer of our independence march.

* He's lying after shotting from immaculate forehead
Fore the sake of a crescent ya Rab( Our God),  suns are  sinking. (Suns mean a lot of Turkish people   shining like a sun.)

What do you think about Turkish flag after reading this topic? If you share your comments with me, I'll be happy. :)
